In Conversation: Amy Friend

In mid-November Amy Friend and I sat down together to talk about her art practice and the evocative photo-based compositions that are found in her series Vestiges, Dare Alla Luce, and Multi-Verse. These three projects reveal themes that can be found across the entirety of Friend’s artistic career, featuring her ongoing explorations of human relationships, her deep respect for ancestral ties, her fascination with the act of making photographs, along with observations about how we process and experience memory, and the interconnectedness of all things. The resulting artworks ask us to consider how we look at and live with collections of photographs, as well as reminding us of how time is fleeting. Viewers will notice that bodies of water feature prominently in Friend’s practice; a motif that intentionally recurs again and again.

In Conversation: Gun Roze on his series MANHATTAN 1982

In 1980, Gun Roze began regularly visiting a close friend who had moved to New York City. During these trips, he plunged headfirst into a vibrant culture that felt radically different from his experiences in Toronto. Fascinated by all that he saw, in 1982 Roze started making photographs of life at street level in Manhattan, creating an engrossing visual history which captures the daily (and nightly) rhythms of New Yorkers. Those photographs became the series MANHATTAN 1982.

In Conversation: Janice Reid and Stéphane Alexis

To welcome Stéphane Alexis to the FFOTO roster, we invited fellow FFOTO artist Janice Reid to lead a conversation with him via Zoom. Both of these artists make work that explores aspects of their Caribbean diaspora backgrounds, producing photographs that suggest the resiliency and histories - and futures - of the Black experience. The resulting conversation is a fascinating exchange of ideas about the approaches and inspirations that drive these talented emerging artists’ photo-based practices. Reid and Alexis offer insight into how their experiences and communities inform the themes they explore through their work, and where they see their practices heading in the future.

Irene Fay: The Diamonds are in the Enlarger

In her lifetime, photographer Irene Fay (1914-1986) survived some of the most convulsive events in recent European history. Just before she died, she wrote letters to her children and grandchildren. One of the handwritten messages left in her art studio read, “The diamonds are in the enlarger.” This was a clue for the family inheritance: literally inside Irene’s photo enlarger were the diamonds she and her husband had smuggled out of Poland in August 1939.
