In Conversation: Jon Setter and Chris Shepherd

Chris Shepherd and Jon Setter practice photography in opposite corners of the world and, until recently, have never met. The two photographers demonstrate an artistic kinship in their work; while the sources of inspiration for Chris and Jon’s work are similar, the delivery of the content is unique to each artist's process.

FFOTO’s Craig D’Arville suggested to Chris and Jon that they talk to each other about their art practices -- for their own enjoyment and to give collectors a glimpse into their lives. What follows is an earnest and heartfelt email conversation between the two artists that discusses influences, techniques, ideologies, and more. Their correspondence has been edited for ease of reading.

Time – historical time, as well as geological and ideological time – weighs heavily on his work. Looking at his deceptively simple depictions of mid-century watch faces, bottle caps and re-photographed Polaroids, we are reminded of time's passage, how it not only imprints itself on objects we've produced and discarded, but how its passing also affects us emotionally and physically.

FFOTO's Five Quarantine Questions for Barbara Cole, Virginia Mak, and John Lucas

This penultimate FF/QQ checks in with Barbara Cole and Virginia Mak, two fine-art photographers who make compositions imbued with richly narrative elements; and documentary photographer John Lucas, whose first collection of evocative explorations of Soviet-era Russia from 1981 have just been added to FFOTO's inventory - a second series, comprising pairs of polaroids from that same journey, will be available to collectors in June.
