Dated and annotated "KR" (Karsh Retrospective), in pencil, with artist copyright stamp, in ink, au mount verso
Printed in 1990
The photographs of Yousuf Karsh are amongst the most recognized of mid 20th Century portraiture. For decades, his studio was regarded as one of the best in the world, and as a result he was often commissioned to create iconic portraits to commemorate famous individuals.
This portrait of Winston Churchill was taken immediately after the better known image, which Karsh called The Roaring Lion. The portrait of Churchill smiling was the one that Karsh himself preferred, but it is one that is seldom seen and is especially rare in a print of this size.
PROVENANCE: This photograph was purchased from the Karsh Studio, Ottawa, in 1990. It has been housed in an archival frame since the time of purchase and appears flawless, with strong tonality.
