Denis Rioux is an artist photographer based in Montreal. He is interested in the ever-changing and evolving photographic process as a way to acknowledge and represent the complexity of our relationship to the world, and also in the specificity of the experience it involves. In his practice, photography is a thought generator and a source of discovery.
Rioux' photographs are to be considered as an expression of the fragility and thickness of things and the concrete in our everyday visual experiences. In his research and creative projects, he works on the “photographic” and its specificity as a model for thinking and forms of representation, and as modes of apprehension of the complexity of the world. In his research, the photographic experience and aesthetic is determined by its own spatiality and temporality and is considered to be rooted in the art of description.
Before taking up studies in photography at the Fine Arts Department of Concordia University in Montreal in 1997, Denis Rioux was a self-taught artist photographer. In September 2018, he received his PhD’s in Art Theory and Practice, with specialization in photography, at the Université du Québec à Montréal, where he also teaches photography since 2009. He has had his work exhibited in galleries in Montreal and also abroad.
