Collier had a storied career as an anthropologist, but his skills as a photographer caught the attention of Roy Striker who hired him to photograph for the Farm Security Administration, as well as other important commissions.

This richly toned photograph marries his two professional interests and is an empathetic portrait of traditional Peruvian life. Although Collier was obviously close to his subjects, he does not intrude on their space which offers the viewer a dignified portrait that does not resort to exoticism.
