Shoshannah White is a photo-based artist living in Portland, Maine. Her practice includes photography, painting, sculpture and public art installation. Her work has been featured in publications and exhibitions internationally. Her installation work is sited throughout Maine.
Shoshannah received her BFA from The Savannah College of Art and Design and has studied at the Center for Creative Imaging as well as the Maine Photographic Workshop, receiving several scholarships for study. Shoshannah has completed artist residencies in the United States, the Canadian Maritimes and in Svalbard, Norway, within the Arctic Circle. She has been awarded grants through organizations including the Berkshire Taconic Foundation, Arts New Brunswick, Canada and the Maine Arts Commission, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
She has completed many private and public commissions, often incorporating photography into architectural or sculptural form. In 2012, Public Art Network’s Year in Review selected Shoshannah’s work as one of the top 50 commissions installed in the United States. She has been a guest critic, a visiting artist and lecturer at colleges and universities including the University of Southern Maine and Wheelock College in Boston. She has taught workshops and provided private instruction in a number of specialized photographic and painting techniques.
Her work is included in The Dancing Bear Collection of W.M. Hunt, The Judy Glickman-Lauder Collection at the Portland Museum of Art and at the Bates College Museum of Art among others. Her work is also included in W.M. Hunt’s book “The Unseen Eye” published by Thames & Hudson - an Aperture edition. Her work mixing photographic media with encaustic paint is featured in “The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes” by Christopher James.
She has participated in the Portland Museum of Art’s Artist Intervention series and has exhibited her work widely including the Robert Berman Gallery in Los Angeles, California, The Center for Photography at Wood-stock, New York, Whitney Artworks in Portland, Maine, Bates College Museum of Art in Lewiston, Maine, the Revolving Museum in Boston, Massachusetts, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport, Maine, The Museo Raccolte Frugone in Genova, Italy and the Hellenic Society in Mytilene, Greece – among others. Her editorial work and licensed imagery is affiliated with Aurora/Novus Select in Portland, Maine and New York with photographs appearing in such publications as Photo District News, National Geographic, Newsweek, Psychology Today, Details, Der Speigel and The Wall Street Journal.
