Over 30 years, Karilee Fuglem has developed a body of work that shares her delight in the way invisible phenomena are revealed through subtly visual and often overlooked clues. She works with several media, often in vast environmental installations that disappear and reappear with changes in daylight. Her photographic works can be simple records of “light events” glimpsed in an attentively observational studio practice; sustained focus on water or snow patterns as they reveal air currents; or re-contextualizations of skin and dust as spatial and geographical vistas. “They describe what I understand to be a continual fullness in the non-visible world and testify to its everyday wonders, like the way a bit of fluff will drift on a breath of air, or a scrap of anything can light up, momentarily coming alive.”
Originally from British Columbia, Fuglem has lived and worked in Montreal since 1989. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Musée National des beaux-arts du Québec, who hold her work in their collections. Fuglem is represented by Pierre-François Ouellete art contemporain, Montreal, where she has exhibited regularly since 2002.
