“Pavel Banka was an Artist-in-Residence at Light Work in September 1987 and the first European artist to participate in the program. This was Banka’s second trip to the United States from his native Prague, Czechoslovakia where he makes a living as a commercial photographer. He explained that it was a great privilege, that many Czechs will never experience leaving their country more than once in a lifetime. As though he might only have one month left to live, Banka set out to photograph American people and continue his dramatic studio series with models.” — Gina Murtagh
