Matthieu Brouillard has been creating photographic series, video installations, and films since 2003. He combines documentary approaches and mise en scène, and reinvests aspects of mythology and the pictorial tradition, principally Baroque and Mannerist. He studied media arts and art theory at the Université du Québec à Montréal (PhD, 2013). He has been a lecturer and invited researcher at various universities and art schools, including the University of Zürich, the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, the Geneva University of Art and Design, and the University of Bern.
Brouillard's work has been featured in many publications (Ciel Variable, SHOTS Magazine, Samuel Beckett Aujourd’hui, Les écrits…) and shown in numerous galleries and artistic institutions (VU, Dazibao, Oboro, Le Fresnoy, Kunsthalle Bern, PhotoforumPasquArt, iaab Projektraum, Musée de l’Élysée…). He has published three books of photographs—Narragonie (2007), Darkness Implacable (2012) and Coming Through the Fog (2013; with Donigan Cumming)—and produced and directed a feature-length documentary with surrealist undertones entitled Regarding Gravity, which premiered in 2017 at the Montreal International Documentary Festival. Since 2019, he has been chief photographer at the Canadian Centre for Architecture.
