Yan Giguère’s work is characterized by the display of large numbers of meticulously arranged photographs. In each of his photographic installations, the selected and grouped images evoke different facets of the main theme or themes. From the relationships between the images emerge formal, narrative or poetic associations. Several stories take form and intersect. Employing a technique very similar to film editing, Yan Giguère explores the way we perceive time, which he sees not as a linear succession but as a simultaneous explosion of moments. He aims in his work to create open ensembles that highlight and examine the coexistence of different layers of reality. The challenge he sets himself is to transcend the private, anecdotal or banal nature of the subjects photographed in order to present a multiple-access cosmogony.
Yan Giguère lives and works in Montreal. His work has been the subject of a number of solo exhibitions in Montreal, including Chavirer presented at Galerie Vox (2001), Bienvenue, at Galerie B312 (2002), Choisir, at Galerie Occurrence (2007), Attractions, at Galerie Optica (2009), and Visites libres, at the Centre Clark (2013), as well as a retrospective at the Musée d’art de Joliette (2016). Among the numerous public and private collections featuring his work are those of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Musée d’art de Joliette, Collection Desjardins and Collection Hydro-Québec.
