Morris Engel (American; 1918-2005) was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Abraham Lincoln High School and joined the Photo League in 1936, where he met Aaron Siskind and Paul Strand who each became major influences in his life.
Engel worked for the New York City newspaper PM, and then enlisted in the Navy, where he was a combat photographer. He would go on to make many magazine picture stories in the late 1940s.
Engel also made films, and his classic film, Little Fugitive, co-created with his wife, renowned photojournalist Ruth Orkin, was released in 1953.
